Cane made with plastic substanceCelluloid or the art of imitatingIn the lead of artifical ivory, we find the celluloid, which has been the primary one that have found a reliable common use in the industry. Here above, M. Maurice de Thierry in "the popular science", -" la science populaire" the 18th novembre 1881-.explains clearly the make of celluloid. "As the name show us, the celluloid is a complex material made with cellulose, first discovered in 1869 by an american man named Hyatt . To make the celluloid, we use a light texture paper, like cigaret paper, for example. The fuse of the two acids modifies the paper in soft paste, than washed, drained, and driedy out, where we add some camphor and colours. Completly dried and warmed up it can be mould to take all the possible shapes. Hyatt succeeded, at least regarding ivory, tortoise shell, and horn, make and design combs, cane handle, and billiard balls." Here under: A cane entirely designed in celluloid.
