Pommel in corozo nutHigh Cane known as the head of Saint-Just, sculpted in corozo nut. The shaft is surrounded by a ring made of ivory and leather; the shaft is made of a spine of a boa.

PommelProfile view of the pommel. Is it a low bicorne, stylized due to the small size of the corozo nut or is it a cap?

Saint-Just published, in 1791, a book that made great loud: "The spirit of the revolution and the constitution." He had been elected Deputy of the Aisne county in September 1792 and had been admitted at the Comité de salut public (State security Committee), where he extended the rights of the commissioners, in 1793.

He will be among the close friends of Robespierre. Arrested with Robespierre, he will be guillotined in 1794.

Proud'hon and David will leave portraits of the man who was named the terror archangel.

Popular art Cane

Popular art Cane
Beautiful popular art Cane, sculpted all in one piece from a shrub presenting wide natural protuberances. The pommel, sculpted from the root, represents a man head covered with a cocked hat.

From the Directoire epoch, this head may possibly represent an artist or a character of the Comedia del Arte (Pulcinella).

However, the presence of the cockade may indicate someone having played a political role in the French revolution. We need to find out his name.

This enigmatic Cane is a remarkable popular art sculpture, of which the nervous and expressive making is perfectly harmonized with the shaft naturally tormented, reflecting as a whole the fashion and the spirit of the Directoire.
