Jacobins, "Jacoquins"

The Muscadins used to call the Jacobins the "Jacoquins" ("coquin" means rascal)

Incroyable's Cane

Remarkable Incroyable Cane, most probably representing the conventional Barras. The shaft is made of medlar tree wood, scarified with a knife. The bust is made of blond horn (ram horn) and the hat is made of black horn (buffalo).

The muscadins, who had elected the Café de Chartres as headquarters, caused the first fights at the end of Fructidor, hunting down the Jacobins, the "Jacoquins" they said.

The word Jacobin targets, in its strict meaning, the members of the Jacobin' s Club, created in 1789, the most well known political society in the French revolution.

From where does come the name? The name "Club des Jacobins" was inherited from the building where the meetings were attended, near the rue Saint-Honoré, a property formerly owned by the Dominican's Order, chased out of the convent in 1790 and who were called "the jacobins" from 1217 on. Robespierre and his friends will dominate the club. In 1791 the moderates founded the Feuillant's Club, the majority of the Jacobins became republican.

This Incroyable wears the bicorne and a lavaliere. The shaft is made of rush.

The 9 Thermidor will mark the end of the Jacobins and the 11 November 1794 their meeting room will be closed. They will reappear at the Club of the Pantheon under the Directoire, that will disperse them by February 27, 1796 from the Club du Manège and then Rue du Bac after the 18 Fructidor. In 1799, when Bonaparte overthrow the Directoire, the dissolution is already accomplished.
