The muscadins, who had elected the Café
de Chartres as headquarters, caused the first fights at the end of Fructidor,
hunting down the Jacobins, the "Jacoquins" they said.
The word Jacobin targets, in its strict
meaning, the members of the Jacobin' s Club, created in 1789, the most well
known political society in the French revolution.
From where does come the name? The name "Club
des Jacobins" was inherited from the building where the meetings were attended,
near the rue Saint-Honoré, a property formerly owned by the Dominican's
Order, chased out of the convent in 1790 and who were called "the jacobins"
from 1217 on. Robespierre and his friends will dominate the club. In 1791 the
moderates founded the Feuillant's Club, the majority of the Jacobins became
republican. |
